Who is Ana Botella?

Ana Botella Serrano (Madrid, 23 March 1954) is a Spanish politician belonging to the Spanish right wing Partido Popular (PP). She is the wife of the former Spanish prime minister José María Aznar.

She is on the Madrid city council, where she his second in line to the mayor and serves as Environment Delegate since 2007. In this position she has exemplified a controversial political program criminalizing open urban interventions, and has promoted several neoliberal initiatives supporting the privatization of community living as well as several disciplinary measures to solve environmental issues.

She is particularly infamous for her conservative remarks regarding contemporary living. Among her better know quotes is that regarding her opposition to same sex marriage in 2004:

"If you add two apples, well, you get two apples. If you add an apple and a pear, you can't ever get two apples because these are different components. Man and woman are one thing, which is marriage, and two men or two women would be something different.”
